Please note; Past medical history is essential for most medicals, therefore in most cases, we are only able to perform these examinations for patients registered at Newquay Health Centre.

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements.  This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations.  These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine.  Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

For ongoing muscular or joint pains it is possible to self refer to Newquay Physiotherapy Department (with certain exceptions)

• Patients with back/neck pain must see a clinician first for a written referral.
• Children between 10 and 16 must be referred by a GP. They do not see children under 10

Please complete the self referral form then send to the department via post/fax/email or by hand. This will then be reviewed and you will be contacted to arrange a convenient time.

NHS Health Checks

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia.

These conditions can often be prevented – even if you have a family history of them.

We are now able to offer free NHS health checks to assess the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.

We will be inviting patients between the ages of 40 and 74 who haven’t been diagnosed with any of the above conditions, every 5 years.

What happens at the check?

You will be asked some simple questions regarding your family history and take measurements such as height, weight and blood pressure. You will also have a finger prick test to check your cholesterol level.

Your health professional will explain your results to you and you will be given personalised advice on how to reduce your risk and stay healthy.

You will be directed to your GP for further advice and treatment if necessary.

The Minor Ailments Scheme

The Community Pharmacy Minor Ailments Scheme is a service available in Newquay and means you do not need to wait for an appointment to see your doctor about certain conditions.

Conditions treated are;

Conjunctivitis (Red sticky eyes) - Children over 1yr and adults

Cystitis (Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection) – Women over 18ys, you will be asked for a urine sample.

Impetigo (Skin condition) - Children over 1yr and adults

If you are suffering from any of these problems you can get advice and treatment from your local pharmacy.

If you do not usually pay for your prescriptions, then your pharmacy will be able to supply the medicine free of charge under the scheme.  If you usually pay for prescriptions you will be charged a fee equivalent to the cost of a prescription.

The pharmacist may refer you back to your GP if they feel your illness is not treatable under the scheme or the medicine available through the scheme is not suitable for you.

Private Services & Fees

Due to the increasing demands for non-NHS work, which is not covered by the Doctor's NHS contract, a fee will be charged for some services. These include procedures for private healthcare, certain medicals and the signing of forms and certificates.

Why do GPs sometimes charge fees?

Dr Nick Walker (MB MRCGP DRCOG DA) is able to offer non-surgical cosmetic treatment.

We offer Botulinum Toxin wrinkle reducing injections (Botox) and Dermal filler injections (Restylane).  Botulinum injections are used to treat dynamic wrinkles, those that appear when you frown, smile or laugh.

Restylane is part of a family of treatments known as fillers.  Essentially whereas Botox prevents a muscle from contracting and causing a wrinkle in the skin, a filler is used to plump up the skin and fill out the wrinkle.

We aim to provide a premier service, treatment is tailor made to individual clients.  All relevent medical details are noted and treatment is discussed, planned and priced prior to commencement.

Initial consultation to discuss treatment is free.

A deposit is required if treatment is booked.

• One area:     £200
• Two areas:    £250
• Three areas: £300
